The D27M BLUETOP is larger than the group 34 batteries and is identical internally to our Group 27 YELLOWTOP battery. The OPTIMA D34M BLUETOP is the same size as the 34M BLUETOP, but is slightly heavier and offers more reserve capacity than the 34M (55Ah vs 50Ah) and the ability to be deep-cycled, while offering slightly less marine cranking amps (870 vs 1000). However, all other OPTIMA BLUETOP marine batteries, the D34M, D27M and D31M BLUETOPs are considered dual-purpose batteries, designed for both starting and deep-cycle use. Internally, the 34M BLUETOP is identical to our Group 34 REDTOP automotive battery. The OPTIMA 34M BLUETOP is such a marine battery- designed & warrantied for starting applications. It may only be designed for starting a boat engine, not running live wells, trolling motors or large stereo systems when the engine is turned off. So not all marine batteries are considered deep-cycle batteries and without threaded terminals, not all deep-cycle batteries may be considered marine batteries. Internally, the two batteries may be identical, but that doesn't mean the marine battery is necessarily designed, intended or warrantied for deep-cycle use. For that reason, marine batteries typically offer threaded terminals, if not both threaded and SAE (automotive) terminals.įrom that standpoint, those threaded terminals may be the only thing that differentiates a marine battery from an automotive battery. Many boats have eyelet connections for batteries, that can be secured to threaded terminals on a battery. To explain the differences between a deep-cycle and marine battery, we should define them. In those boats, they'll often have a dedicated starting battery and then either another battery or bank of batteries for accessory or auxiliary use. However, fishing boats with trolling motors, wake boats with large stereos and larger watercraft tend to need more than one battery. When it comes to buying a boat battery, most folks just need one that will start the engine and perhaps run a few accessories.
